I always like to research a couple of fascinating facts about the city or country I am visiting. I’ll then casually reveal these to my fellow travelers when we are about to land, during dinner on the first night, while we are walking around the streets… It’s a great way to look at things differently, get excited, and most importantly, forget sore feet…
I’ve been doing this for years, but the first time I consciously did the research was for a trip to Hong Kong with my dad and I wanted to share it so you can use them too!
Victoria Harbor Star Ferry service started running in 1880. Back then, the journey took ONE HOUR. Thankfully, nowadays it only takes about 10 minutes. This is such an important part of history to experience while in Hong Kong, discover some others in this post.
The crossing time may have shortened, but they are very old school in terms of tickets. If you haven’t opted for an Octopus Card (which I don’t think you need) then you will want to save your coins.
The city is known for its money and entrepreneurial spirit, and back in 2020, 96 residents were confirmed to have personal fortunes over $1 billion (Drinks on them…)
Nip into the bar at the Intercontinental for a cocktail and see if you can spot any of them…
Dim Sum (yum!) originated in Hong Kong! The official translation means they are called “touch the heart”.
Hong Kong Island is definitely the most famous, but there are over 260 islands in the state. You can reach some of them by Ferry like Lantau, Cheung, Chau and Lamma, but others are completely uninhabited and almost unreachable.
The Hong Kong – Macau bridge (which you can see in the distance from most skyscrapers) opened in October 2018 and it’s 55 kilometers long, making it the longest sea-crossing (for reference, the shortest point on the British Channel is 34 kilometers)
Personally, I recommend the Ferry if you want a road trip to Macau.
Add the above to your itinerary, which you can build from these articles, and you’ll begin to feel like you know the city even before you’ve visited.
